• Fuzhou is a city in Fujian, offering local culture, cuisine and everyday Chinese life.

History

• Fuzhou has a history of over two thousand years as a city; during the Minyue Kingdom period, a city was already built around Yeshan, hence the name "Yecheng." Since the Tang Dynasty, Fuzhou has long been the political and cultural center of Fujian, and culture and education flourished in the Song Dynasty. In modern times, Fuzhou became one of China's earliest port cities open to trade, and the Mawei Naval School produced China's first generation of modern naval and industrial talent; the Three Lanes and Seven Alleys area produced many famous figures such as Lin Zexu, Yan Fu, and Bing Xin. Today's Fuzhou both preserves the layout of the old city and the fabric of its old streets and also has developed into an important central city on the west coast of the Taiwan Strait, where tradition and modernity coexist harmoniously.

Culture

• Fuzhou's culture is distinguished by the blending of the Min capital's literary heritage with a maritime flavor. The local Fuzhou dialect, part of the Mindong group, has a distinctive and elegant sound. In cuisine, Min dishes such as fish balls, rouyan (meat dumplings), Buddha Jumps Over the Wall, and guobianhu (rice batter soup) are unforgettable, and the jasmine tea scenting technique is a national-level intangible cultural heritage. The Three Lanes and Seven Alleys, known as "half of modern Chinese history," is a showcase of traditional courtyard architecture and celebrity culture. Traditional crafts such as Fuzhou cork carving and bodiless lacquerware are exquisitely refined, while folk customs like the Aoju Festival and deity processions are full of local color, and pinghua storytelling and chichang singing convey the warmth of old Fuzhou life.

Science & Technology

• Fuzhou is Fujian's center for education, science, and innovation, home to Fuzhou University, Fujian Normal University, and other universities, along with a number of provincial-level and higher research platforms. The digital economy, marine economy, and optoelectronics industry are innovation priorities, with clustered development in the Internet of Things, big data, and display panels; Fuzhou Software Park gathers a large number of tech companies. Leveraging its port and open-platform advantages, Fuzhou is accelerating its layout in electronic information, new energy, and other fields, building itself into an innovation hub for the western shore of the Taiwan Strait.

Economy

• Fuzhou's GDP reached 1,511.232 billion yuan in 2025, making it a key economic engine of Fujian Province. Electronics and information, textiles and chemical fibers, machinery manufacturing, and food processing form its pillar industries, and Fuzhou Port is a major deep-water port area on the southeast coast. Traditional strengths such as textiles and garments and aquatic product processing have a solid foundation, while the digital economy and marine economy have become new growth drivers. A number of well-known private enterprises have grown strong in Fuzhou, and Changle Airport and the high-speed rail network connect it to domestic and international markets, with the city's economy continuing to improve.
