History

• History: Kunming's urban history dates back over two thousand years. During the Warring States period, Zhuang Qiao entered Yunnan; in the Han dynasty, Yizhou Commandery was established; and in the Tang dynasty, the Nanzhao Kingdom built Tuodong City, making it a key town in central Yunnan. In the Yuan dynasty, Yunnan Province was established with Kunming as its capital, a status it retains today. In modern times, Kunming founded the National Southwestern Associated University, where during the war many great scholars gathered and academic traditions were passed on. During the Ming dynasty, when the Mu family governed Yunnan, Kunming's city walls were built, laying the foundation for its urban layout. Today, as an open gateway to South and Southeast Asia, Kunming continues the inclusive and open historical character of this ancient plateau city.

Culture

• Culture: The Kunming dialect belongs to Southwestern Mandarin and is friendly and easy to understand. This is a place where many ethnic groups blend, with colorful festivals such as the Yi Torch Festival and the Bai Third Month Fair, and each group has its own distinctive clothing, songs and dances, and silverwork. Flowers are the city's calling card, and the Dounan Flower Market is the largest fresh-flower trading market in the country. Crossing-the-bridge rice noodles, steam-pot chicken, and wild mushroom hot pot form a distinctive Yunnan cuisine culture. The seagulls by Green Lake and the teahouses are part of the slow daily life of the Spring City. The long narrative poem Ashima of the Sani people of Stone Forest has been sung for a thousand years and is an enduring emblem of Yunnan culture.

Science & Technology

• Technology: Kunming has abundant university resources, with institutions such as Yunnan University, Kunming University of Science and Technology, and Yunnan Normal University cultivating talent for regional development. Research institutes such as the Kunming Institute of Botany of the Chinese Academy of Sciences are at the global forefront of biodiversity research. Supported by plateau-characteristic agricultural science and technology, Kunming's flower, tobacco, and biopharmaceutical industries are mature and well developed, while the High-tech Industrial Development Zone and the Central Yunnan New Area drive the continued upgrading of industries such as new materials and equipment manufacturing.

Economy

• Economy: Kunming's 2025 GDP reached 863.745 billion yuan, making it Yunnan's economic center. Tourism, flowers, biomedicine, equipment manufacturing, and tobacco are pillar industries, with Dounan flowers sold nationwide and even to Southeast Asia. As a gateway city facing South and Southeast Asia, Kunming leverages the pilot free trade zone and the China-Laos Railway to develop cross-border trade and logistics. In 2025, the per capita disposable income of urban residents was about 58,938 yuan, and the consumer market continues to thrive.
