History

• History: Xining's history begins in the Western Han dynasty, when the court established Xiping Commandery here; subsequent dynasties all set up administrative bodies, making it the political and military center of the Hehuang region. In the Tang dynasty it was called Shanzhou, and in the Song dynasty Qingtang City; it was an important node on the southern route of the Silk Road and the Tang-Tubo Ancient Road, where Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu and other ethnic groups came and lived together. In the Ming and Qing periods, Xining's status as a hub linking the interior with the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau was further consolidated. In modern times, with the extension of railways and highways, Xining's role as a hub has become more prominent, and today it has developed into the economic and cultural center of Qinghai Province.

Culture

• Culture: Xining is a city where Han, Tibetan, Hui, Tu and other ethnic cultures blend, with particularly strong Tibetan Buddhist culture. Kumbum Monastery (Ta'er Temple) is one of the six great monasteries of the Gelug school of Tibetan Buddhism, and its butter sculptures, murals and thangka appliqué are known as the three supreme arts. The Xining dialect belongs to the Northern Mandarin system and has a distinct Hehuang character. Local dishes such as hand-grabbed mutton, liangpi (cold noodles) and tianpei (sweet fermented barley) have unique flavors that linger in the memory. Every year in the sixth lunar month, the Hua'er Festival is a grand folk singing event, where singers improvise antiphonal songs that drift across the mountains and fields, showcasing the unique cultural charm of this plateau city.

• Science and Technology: Xining is the science and education center of Qinghai Province. Qinghai University is a national 211 Project key university and has trained many talents for the plateau region. Leveraging its geographical and resource advantages, Xining has developed distinctive research strengths in plateau medicine, Tibetan medicine, salt lake chemical engineering, and new energy, with many research institutions establishing platforms here. In recent years, clean energy industries such as photovoltaics and lithium batteries have developed rapidly, digitalization has continued to advance, and technological innovation is injecting new momentum into this plateau city.

• Economy: In 2025, Xining's GDP reached 191.48 billion yuan. Xining is the economic center of Qinghai Province. Relying on abundant salt lake resources, the salt lake chemical industry is a distinctive pillar, while new energy, new materials, biomedicine and other industries are also accelerating their development. As the central city of the northeastern Qinghai-Tibet Plateau, Xining's commerce, logistics and tourism services are increasingly prosperous, with attractions such as Kumbum Monastery drawing many visitors.
