Save money, time & hassle
Border permit (bianfangzheng)
The Pamir (White Sand Lake, Karakul, Tashkurgan) requires a border permit: free and same-day at the Kashgar permit office with your ID, or arranged at home before you leave.
Respect local customs
Photograph the mosque from outside only—no entering prayer areas or snapping worshippers, and dress modestly. Always ask before photographing people, and respect dietary customs.
Altitude sickness
The Pamir sits at 3,000–4,000 m: no running or jumping, keep showers short, carry canned oxygen (sold in Tashkurgan) and warm layers. Be cautious with heart or blood-pressure conditions.
Late rhythm & smart shopping
Life runs 2–3 hours behind the east—breakfast shops open around 10 am. Ask prices before haggling, and leave jade and pricey items alone unless you really know them.
