Save money, time & hassle
Border permit needed
Baihaba is a border-control area: get a permit in Habahe County or arrange it at home before you leave; package tours usually handle it for you.
Book accommodation way ahead
In the Sep–Oct peak, Hemu cabins easily top ¥1,000 a night and sell out—book 2–3 weeks ahead; on a budget, base in Jiadengyu or Burqin instead.
Cold swings & gear
At 1,000–2,000 m it can snow even in September—bring a down jacket or shell. Peak foliage runs late Sep to early Oct; after National Day crowds thin but winter may already be arriving.
Shuttles & winter driving
Private cars can't enter Kanas—shuttles only, and the last one leaves early, so plan your exit. In winter you need snow tires or 4WD, and some roads are closed by traffic control.
