History

• Shenyang was known in ancient times as Houcheng and Shenzhou, and in the Ming Dynasty the Shenyang Guard was established here. In 1625, the Later Jin moved its capital to this city and renamed it Shengjing, making it the birthplace of the Qing dynasty; the Shenyang Imperial Palace was built at this time. After the Qing established its capital in Beijing, Shenyang continued to prosper as a secondary capital. In modern times, Shenyang was once renamed Fengtian, and the Marshal Zhang Mansion witnessed the city's turbulent history of that era. In the first half of the 20th century, Shenyang developed into an important industrial city, with heavy industries such as machine tools, aircraft, and automobiles taking root here, making it a major center of China's equipment manufacturing industry.

• The Shenyang dialect belongs to Northeastern Mandarin, known for its bold, humorous tone and heavy use of erhua (r-coloring).
