History

• Human activity in the Changchun area dates back to the Bronze Age. In the mid-Qing dynasty, settlements gradually formed as migrants from within the passes reclaimed land, and the place was named "Changchun" for its fertile soil and dense forests. At the end of the 19th century, the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway made it a railway hub, spurring rapid urban growth and leaving a large number of modern buildings. In the 1950s, the First Automobile Works was built here, making Changchun the cradle of China's automobile industry; it also earned the title "Film City" for its film studio, laying the foundation for its industrial and cultural heritage.

Culture

• The Changchun dialect belongs to Northeastern Mandarin and is hearty and friendly. Local operas such as Errenzhuan and Ji opera are widely popular, while yangge and ice lantern activities offer distinct charm in each season. The clivia is the city flower, and growing and admiring clivias is a favorite pastime of residents, earning Changchun the reputation of "Home of the Clivia." Film culture runs deep in the city's fabric, and the Changchun Film Studio Site Museum passes the memory of cinema down through generations. • Changchun's 2025 GDP reached 800.559 billion yuan. The automotive industry is the absolute pillar, with FAW Group's headquarters and production bases for brands such as Hongqi and Jiefang located here, supported by a complete vehicle and parts supply chain. In recent years, rail transit equipment, biomedicine, optoelectronics, and film and cultural tourism have flourished, while the ice-and-snow and convention economies continue to heat up, keeping the city's economy on steady growth amid transformation and upgrading.
