Lushan Scenic Area Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
Lushan in Jiujiang, Jiangxi, faces the Yangtze to the north and Poyang Lake to the east, famed for its majestic peaks and sheer cliffs. A UNESCO World Cultural Landscape, its highest summit is Hanyang Peak (1,474 m), immortalized by Su Shi's line about not seeing the mountain's true face from inside it. The mountain town of Guling is the base, with sites like Rugin Lake, Flower Path, Jinxiu Valley, Fairy Cave, Hankou Pass and Sandiequan Waterfall. Plan 2-3 days covering east and west routes.

  1. Guling Town
    Start · Entrance
From Guling Town, tour the West Route: Ruqin Lake is shaped like a violin, with lake and mountain scenery reflecting each other; adjacent is Flower Path, where Bai Juyi wrote of peach blossoms, with the "Flower Path" stone inscription and Bai Sima's Thatched Cottage. About 40 minutes. Why this route: Ruqin Lake and Flower Path are the gateway to Lushan's West Route, combining lake views with poetic culture for an easy start to the Lushan trip.
  2. Rugin Lake
about 4900 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  3. Flower Path
about 330 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  4. Jinxiu Valley
about 70 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Follow the Jinxiu Valley boardwalk, where strange peaks and rocks and shifting cloud seas fill the valley, descending all the way to Immortal Cave—legend says Lü Dongbin cultivated here; inside are stone Taoist statues, and from the cave mouth the Yangtze River stretches like a ribbon in the distance. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: Jinxiu Valley is the most concentrated stretch of Lushan scenery, and Immortal Cave combines Taoist legend with sweeping views—the essence of the West Route is all here.
  5. Fairy Cave
about 680 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  6. Hankou Pass
about 2520 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
The next day or the same afternoon, head to the East Route's Hanpokou—the best spot in Lushan for sunrise and views of Poyang Lake; two peaks before it stand like a gate, and the lake stretches vast and misty; in the distance Five Old Man Peaks look like five elders sitting side by side. About 1 hour. Why this route: Hanpokou's imagery of "a thousand miles of Poyang Lake held in one mouth" is unique, a signature Lushan viewpoint.
  7. Sandiequan Waterfall
about 6130 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
From Hanpokou take the sightseeing bus to Sandie Spring, descending over 1,600 steps to the valley floor: the waterfall drops in three tiers, with a total fall of 155 meters, like the Milky Way hanging upside down—"without reaching Sandie Spring, you are not a true Lushan guest." About 2.5 hours round trip, fairly strenuous. Why this route: Sandie Spring is Lushan's most spectacular waterfall; standing beneath its rushing waters is the most memorable experience of the trip.
