Real coordinates · smooth curved route
The Yungang Grottoes, carved in the Northern Wei Dynasty, preserve 45 major caves and over 50,000 statues along the south face of Wuzhou Mountain, running east to west. Highlights: Cave 3 (Lingyan Temple Cave, the largest cave), Caves 5-6 (twin caves, with Cave 6 praised as Yungang's finest), Caves 9-13 (the Wuhua Caves, the peak of Northern Wei polychrome art), and Cave 20 (the exposed Great Buddha, Yungang's iconic image).

Cave 5's main statue is a seated Buddha about 17 meters tall, the largest Buddha at Yungang; Cave 6 is famous for its reliefs of Shakyamuni's Jataka stories and is called "Yungang's First Great Wonder." Why this route: Caves 5–6 have the finest carvings and are the must-see core caves of the whole visit.
  5. Caves 9-13
about 490 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Continue west into the Five Flower Caves (Caves 9–13), where elaborate polychrome paintings and reliefs showcase late Northern Wei artistry. Why this route: The Five Flower Caves preserve fine paintings and superb craftsmanship, representing the peak of Northern Wei art.
  6. Caves 16-20
about 120 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Start at the east entrance and work east to west through the cave complex: first Caves 1–2 (pagoda caves), then Cave 3, Lingyan Temple Cave—the largest at Yungang. Why this route: The cave numbers follow the visiting order, so the east-to-west route flows smoothly with no backtracking.
  7. Cave 20 (Great Buddha)
about 80 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
The last stop is the open-air Great Buddha of Cave 20—the symbol of Yungang, about 13.7 meters tall, solemn and powerful; then return the way you came. Why this route: The open-air Great Buddha is Yungang's icon, and dusk gives the best silhouette shots.
