   Take a boat or bamboo raft down the Li River: clear water, karst peaks lining both banks, cruising through a painting; reach Nine Horses Mural Hill—a natural rock face by the river with the outlines of nine "steeds"; legend says whoever can count all nine is a top scholar. About 2 hours. Why this route: Li River rafting is the core Guilin landscape experience, where the feeling of traveling within a painting reaches its peak.
4. Huangbu Reflection

   about 1300 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight

   Pass by Yellow Cloth Shoal: here the river is wide and calm, with seven peaks reflected in the water—this is the scene on the back of the 20-yuan note; take out a bill to compare the "same" view. About 30 minutes. Why this route: Yellow Cloth Shoal is the Li River's most classic image, and the 20-yuan photo stop is a must-do ritual.
5. Xingping Town

   about 3280 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight

   Disembark at Xingping Pier (or continue to Yangshuo): stroll Xingping Ancient Town—a millennium-old town by the Li River with well-preserved flagstone lanes and an old opera stage; climb Laozhai Hill for a panoramic view of the Li River's great bend. About 1 hour. Why this route: Xingping is the end point of the Li River's finest stretch, where the old town and river views complement each other, and Laozhai Hill offers the most stunning perspective.
