    First visit the Panda Base: dozens of giant pandas roam among bamboo groves; you can watch feeding and the panda kindergarten, utterly adorable. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: Ya'an is the panda homeland, and seeing the national treasure is a must.

    Descend the gorge via the Qingyun Ladder and boardwalk: the V-shaped gorge is deep and secluded, sheer cliffs on both sides, roaring streams, and a winding boardwalk going down. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: a geological wonder of the gorge, a very "wild" hiking experience.
