Lijiang Old Town in Yunnan, founded in the late Song and early Yuan dynasties, is a UNESCO World Heritage site. Built against mountains and threaded with canals fed by Black Dragon Pool, it centers on Sifang Street with five main lanes radiating outward — a water town of flowing streams and drooping willows. Naxi Dongba culture, the Mu Mansion of the hereditary chieftains, cobbled lanes and timber houses give it a unique character. Admission is free (register at the gate); the Mu Mansion charges an entry fee. Allow half a day and linger for the night views.
