Jokhang Temple Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
The Jokhang Temple in central Lhasa's old town, founded in 647 AD, is the most sacred temple in Tibetan Buddhism, enshrining the Jowo Shakyamuni statue (the 12-year-old likeness of the Buddha) brought by Princess Wencheng. Its architecture blends Tibetan, Han and Nepalese styles under gleaming golden roofs. In front, the Barkhor pilgrimage circuit teems with devotees circling and prostrating. Allow 1.5-2 hours; enter from the west gate.

  1. West Gate
    Start · Entrance
  2. Jowo Chapel
about 10 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Enter through the West Gate and head straight for the Jowo Shrine on the ground floor — home to the 12-year-old Shakyamuni statue, solemn and revered, where pilgrims touch the altar with their foreheads in prayer. The hall is dimly lit with butter lamps ever burning; circle it clockwise. About 40 minutes. Why this route: the Jowo statue is the supreme relic for Tibetan Buddhists, and seeing it in person is the heart of the pilgrimage.
  3. Golden Roof
about 50 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Climb the wooden stairs to the second floor to visit the halls of Songtsen Gampo and Princess Wencheng, with exquisite murals. Outside, go up to the roof terrace to look up at the main hall's golden roof: gilded copper tiles gleam in the plateau sun, with the Dharma wheel and twin deer symbolizing the Buddha's teachings. About 30 minutes. Why this route: the second floor lets you study architectural details and murals up close, while the golden roof is the Jokhang's most glorious visual landmark.
  4. Barkhor Street
about 40 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
After leaving the temple, follow Barkhor Street clockwise on the kora: on the stone-paved road pilgrims spin prayer wheels and prostrate, while shops sell Tibetan incense, thangkas and Nepalese trinkets. Pass the Tang-Tibet Alliance Stele (a thousand-year-old stone recording the Tang-Tibet peace pact) and soak up Lhasa's most authentic religious atmosphere. About 40 minutes. Why this route: Barkhor Street extends the Jokhang; a full kora completes the pilgrimage, and you can buy souvenirs and try Tibetan noodles for a taste of Lhasa's street life.
