  1. Main Entrance
    Start · Entrance
  2. Spirit Way Carvings
about 10 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Head north from the entrance along the Spirit Way, where stone carvings line both sides in order: stone lions, winged horses, ostriches, Wengzhong (civil and military stone figures), stone horses and dozens of other Tang-dynasty carvings, tall and finely carved, imposing in presence. About 40 minutes. Why this route: The Spirit Way carvings are the most direct expression of Qianling as the "crown of Tang tombs," with the largest carving group among Tang imperial tombs.
  3. Wordless Stele
about 90 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  4. Shusheng Ji Stele
about 50 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Pause at the two giant steles: the Stele of the Sage on the west (Wu Zetian praising Emperor Gaozong, with text written by her) and the Wordless Stele on the east (traditionally erected by Wu Zetian, leaving her merits and faults for later generations). The two steles stand together with deep historical meaning. About 30 minutes. Why this route: The Wordless Stele is Qianling's most symbolic relic, and its message of leaving judgment to posterity is intriguing.
  5. Liangshan Mound Top
about 80 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Climb Mount Liang (the peak where Qianling sits) and look down from the top: the spirit road extends into the distance like an axis, and the tomb complex built into the mountain is magnificent; gaze out over the Weibei Plateau, vast and open. About 1 hour. Why this route: Only from the summit can you appreciate the imperial boldness of building the tomb into the mountain; Qianling's seamless integration with the landscape is stunning.
