Mount Hua Scenic Area Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
Mount Hua in Huayin, Shaanxi, is the westernmost of the Five Great Mountains and famed as the most perilous — "the world's most precipitous mountain". Five peaks encircle the summit: East (sunrise), West (sunset), South (tallest, 2,154.9 m), Middle and North (gentlest). Ascend by the legendary "one road" footpath (5-7 hours to North Peak) or by the West/North Peak cable cars. Night-climbing for sunrise is a classic; two days is more relaxed.

  1. Visitor Center
    Start · Entrance
  2. West Cable Upper Station
about 8720 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Junction
Take the mountain bus from the visitor center to the West Peak cableway lower station. The cableway crosses the ravine like a flying dragon, reaching near the West Peak in about 20 minutes. Climb the West Peak (Lotus Peak); its summit boulder resembles a lotus, with wide views and a great spot for sunset. About 1 hour. Why this route: the West Peak cableway is the most spectacular ride on Mount Hua; ride up first, then hike between peaks—saves energy and misses none of the highlights.
  3. West Peak
about 4120 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Follow the ridge trail south to Huashan's highest peak, South Peak (Luoyan Peak, 2,154.9 m), its summit dotted with stone inscriptions. East of South Peak lies the famous Changkong Plank Road—a walkway suspended over a sheer cliff; you edge along it in a safety harness, though the faint-hearted can just watch. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: South Peak is Huashan's summit, and the plank road is the ultimate test of "danger"—standing at the cliff edge watching clouds surge is unforgettable.
  4. South Peak
about 740 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  5. Plank Walk in the Sky
about 190 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  6. East Peak
about 470 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  7. Middle Peak
about 70 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  8. North Peak
about 1420 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Take the cable car down from North Peak (about 10 minutes), then the shuttle back to the visitor center. For a night climb, go the reverse way from Yuquan Temple and catch sunrise at North or East Peak the next day. Why this route: The North Peak cable car is a quick, safe descent—seeing all five peaks' highlights in one day is the most efficient way to do Huashan.
  9. North Cable Car
about 130 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Entrance
From South Peak head east past Central Peak (Jade Maiden Peak, said to honor Nongyu, daughter of Duke Mu of Qin) to East Peak (Chaoyang Peak)—a prime sunrise spot, home to thrills like the Sparrowhawk Flip. Finally descend to North Peak (Yuntai Peak), whose summit stele "Huashan Sword Debate" is a must for Jin Yong fans. About 2 hours. Why this route: Tick off Huashan's three peaks in turn—sunrise at East Peak, sword debate at North Peak—capturing both its danger and its wuxia spirit.
