Pudacuo, China's first national park near Shangri-La in Diqing, Yunnan, sits at 3,500-4,159 m. Two alpine lakes — Shudu Lake and Bita Lake — anchor the park, ringed by primeval forest, alpine pasture and wetlands. Seasons paint it differently: rhododendron blooms in spring-summer, golds and crimsons in autumn, snowfields in winter. Walk the Shudu Lake boardwalk (3.3 km) and the Bita Lake boardwalk (4.2 km, with lookout). Allow 4-5 hours and guard against altitude sickness.

    Take the sightseeing bus to Shudu Lake and walk the lakeside boardwalk (about 3.3 km, 1 hour): the water is clear as a mirror, reflecting spruces and snow peaks; cattle and sheep graze by the shore, wildflowers bloom everywhere, and traces of the old horse-caravan trail remain. Why this route: The Shudu Lake boardwalk is the park's core experience—close-up lake views and distant mountains; the purity of this plateau lake is refreshing.
  4. Bita Lake Lookout

    Take the sightseeing bus to the Bita Lake viewing platform: the lake surface is broad as a mirror, surrounded by verdant primeval forest; in May–June azaleas bloom around the lake (the "drunken fish" spectacle), and in autumn the colors are brilliant. After taking in the whole lake from the platform, return the same way. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: Bita Lake is the park's highest and most tranquil lake, and the platform offers a panoramic view of the lake and mountains.
