Suzhou Humble Administrator's Garden Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
The Humble Administrator's Garden (Zhuozheng Yuan) on Dongbei Street in Suzhou's Gusu District was begun in the Zhengde era of the Ming dynasty by Wang Xianchen, a former imperial censor. It is counted among China's four great gardens — with the Summer Palace in Beijing, the Mountain Resort in Chengde and Suzhou's own Lingering Garden — and was inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997 as a leading example of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou. Water is the soul of the garden: broad ponds, dense groves and spare, natural architecture spread across three sections — an open eastern section, the celebrated middle section, and a western section of waterside halls. Yuanxiang Hall, the Pavilion of Four-Sided Lotus Breeze, the Little Flying Rainbow bridge, Sees-the-Mountain Tower, the Hall of Thirty-Six Mandarin Ducks and the fan-shaped Pavilion of Who Sits with Me unfold in sequence, demonstrating borrowed, framed and contrasting views at every turn. Allow 2–3 hours.
