History

• Nanchang's history as a city dates back over two thousand years to the Han Dynasty, and its name means "prospering the southern frontier, the south in prosperity." In the Tang Dynasty, Wang Bo wrote the famous line "the sunset clouds fly together with the lone duck" at Tengwang Pavilion, making the city widely known. During the Ming and Qing dynasties, Nanchang was the administrative and commercial center of Jiangxi. The recently excavated Haihunhou State site has yielded a large number of precious Han Dynasty artifacts, providing important physical evidence for the study of Han history. In modern times, Nanchang has gradually developed into the political, economic, and cultural center of Jiangxi, with high-rises lining both banks of the Gan River as the ancient city takes on new life.

Culture

• Nanchang's culture has a distinct Gan-Po character. The local Gan dialect, Nanchang hua, is plain and forceful in sound. In food, Nanchang mixed rice noodles, clay-pot soup, and stir-fried cured pork with Artemisia selengensis are uniquely flavored, and the "no meal without chili" eating habit leaves a deep impression. Intangible cultural heritages such as Nanchang Caicha opera and porcelain plate painting have been passed down to this day. The Wanshou Palace historical and cultural district recreates the bustling street life where Gan merchants and Taoist culture blended, and the Shengjin Pagoda temple fair is lively and festive. The lights along the Gan River below Tengwang Pavilion are the city's most moving night scene.

Science & Technology

• Nanchang is Jiangxi's center for science and education, home to Nanchang University, Jiangxi Normal University and other universities as well as a number of national-level research platforms. Aircraft manufacturing is the city's most distinctive scientific calling card: large passenger jet components and trainer aircraft developed at the Nanchang Aviation City are renowned at home and abroad, and LED chip and virtual reality (VR) industries are also clustering here. Relying on innovation districts such as Yaohu and Honggutan, Nanchang is accelerating the building of innovative industrial clusters in electronic information, biomedicine and other fields, with research and industry becoming ever more closely integrated.

Economy

• Nanchang's 2025 GDP reached 814.169 billion yuan, making it the economic leader of Jiangxi Province. Its pillar industries include electronic information, automobiles and new energy vehicles, aviation manufacturing, and pharmaceuticals and health, with the Nanchang Aviation City and Jiangling Motors as key representatives. Relying on the Gan River golden waterway and Changbei International Airport, Nanchang has built a three-dimensional transport network of water, land, and air. In recent years, the digital economy and green industries have been expanding rapidly, while cultural tourism brands such as Tengwang Pavilion and the Haihunhou Site are driving consumption upgrading, and the city's economy continues to grow steadily.
