City Overview

• Nanning is a city in Guangxi, offering local culture, cuisine and everyday Chinese life.

History

• History: Nanning was known as Yongzhou in ancient times, with its administrative history dating back to the Jinxing Commandery established during the Eastern Jin dynasty, giving it a history of over 1,600 years. In the Tang dynasty, Yongzhou was established and became a major town in western Lingnan, and thereafter long served as the political and economic center of southwestern Guangxi. In modern times, Nanning was made a city and gradually developed into the capital of the Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region. Since 2004, the China-ASEAN Expo has been held here annually, making Nanning an important platform for exchanges between China and Southeast Asia and giving the city a completely new look. The opening of modern railways and highways spurred the commercial prosperity of Yongcheng, and the urban area has continued to expand along both banks of the Yong River.

Culture

• Culture: Nanning speaks Yue Chinese varieties such as the Yongzhou dialect, while Mandarin is also widely used. The city is home to many ethnic groups, including Zhuang, Han, Yao and Miao; the Zhuang Sanyuesan song fair and other folk customs are lively and colorful, and Zhuang brocade and embroidered balls are hallmarks of intangible cultural heritage. The cuisine leans sour, spicy, fresh and savory, with Laoyou rice noodles, lemon duck and Suanye (pickled fruits and vegetables) famous far and wide, and fruit available year-round. Zhongshan Road night market is full of lively street-food atmosphere, and the slow pace of life in this Green City is its most captivating quality. The Nanning International Folk Song Arts Festival is renowned at home and abroad, filling the Green City's nights with song.

Science & Technology

• Science and Technology: Nanning is Guangxi's center for education and science, home to universities such as Guangxi University and numerous research institutes, bearing the responsibility for regional talent cultivation and technological innovation. In recent years, Nanning has accelerated the building of science and technology cooperation platforms oriented toward ASEAN, with industries such as BeiDou applications, electronic information, and biomedicine gradually growing stronger. New urban areas such as Wuxiang New District incorporate smart city concepts, and new business forms such as the digital economy and cross-border e-commerce are developing rapidly within an open framework.

Economy

• Economy: Nanning's 2025 GDP reached 621.246 billion yuan, making it Guangxi's largest economy. Key industries include electronics, food processing, biomedicine, machinery and equipment, and aluminum deep processing. Leveraging its location facing ASEAN, Nanning is developing its convention and exhibition economy and cross-border e-commerce, with the China-ASEAN Expo bringing huge business opportunities. As a key node on the southwest sea route, the city's hub functions and openness continue to strengthen.
