History

• History: Chengdu has a history of over two thousand years. During the Warring States period, the King of Shu moved his capital here; after Qin conquered Shu, it established Shu Commandery and built the city of Chengdu. During the Three Kingdoms period, Liu Bei founded the Shu Han regime here, and the Wuhou Shrine still commemorates Zhuge Liang. In the Tang dynasty Chengdu's economy flourished, giving rise to the saying "Yangzhou first, Yizhou second," and the poet Du Fu wrote many famous works here. In subsequent dynasties Chengdu remained the political and cultural center of the southwest. During the Five Dynasties period, the ruler of Later Shu planted hibiscus all along the city walls, which is how it earned the name "City of Hibiscus." Today the City of Hibiscus continues its thousand-year cultural heritage and has grown into an international metropolis radiating across the southwest.

Culture

• Culture: Chengdu is known for its laid-back "bashi" (comfortable) lifestyle, and teahouse culture is woven deep into the city's fabric, with covered-bowl tea and bamboo chairs a common street sight. Sichuan cuisine is numbing, spicy, fragrant and fresh, and hot pot, dandan noodles and Zhong dumplings are famous nationwide. Intangible heritage skills such as Sichuan opera face-changing, Shu embroidery, Shu brocade, lacquerware and silver filigree are passed down through generations. Chengdu people love lively gatherings, and lantern fairs, flower fairs and temple fairs have continued for a thousand years. Du Fu Thatched Cottage and Kuanzhai Alley carry the dual memories of poetry and everyday street life, while the open-air tea and the sound of mahjong in the parks show Chengdu people's relaxed spirit to the fullest.

Science & Technology

• Technology: Chengdu is a major hub of science and education in western China, home to Sichuan University, the University of Electronic Science and Technology of China and other universities that train large numbers of electronics and information specialists for the whole country. Chengdu High-tech Zone hosts leading firms such as Huawei and BOE, and its software and information services industry ranks among the largest in China. With strong foundations in aerospace, biomedicine and rail transit equipment, and with Chengdu Science City and Tianfu Laboratory accelerating frontier research, the city's capacity for innovation keeps improving.

Economy

• Economy: Chengdu's 2025 GDP reached 2,476.36 billion yuan, making it one of the largest economies in western China. Electronic information, equipment manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and health, new materials, and green food form its five pillar industries, and several leading internet companies have set up major bases in the city. Chengdu's twin airports and China-Europe freight trains reinforce its role as an inland opening-up hub, and its night economy and consumer vitality are equally renowned nationwide.
