Save money, time & hassle
Border permit & altitude
Tingri and Everest are border zones—a permit is required (arrange it in Lhasa or at home); base camp sits around 5,200 m, so acclimatize in Lhasa first.
Monastery etiquette
Remove hats and sunglasses indoors, and always move clockwise; never photograph statues or monks casually—ask politely first.
Big temperature swings
Day-night swings can exceed 15°C—pack a down jacket even in summer; on the Everest road wind and UV are fierce, so bring sunglasses and sunscreen.
Supplies & signal
Lodging along the Everest road is basic and shops are scarce—carry snacks, water and cash; some stretches have no signal, so share your plan before you go.
