History

• The Hohhot region has since ancient times been a meeting place of nomadic and farming civilizations. In the mid-Ming dynasty, the Tumed tribe pastured here; during the Wanli era they built the city of Kukuhetun, later called Guihua City, meaning "Blue City." In the Qing dynasty, Suiyuan City was built beside it, and the two stood side by side until they were merged as Guisui in the Republican era. In 1954 the city was named Hohhot and became the regional capital. The story of Wang Zhaojun's departure beyond the frontier two thousand years ago took place on these grasslands, bearing witness to friendly exchanges between the Central Plains and the steppe and laying the foundation for the city's diverse and inclusive character.

Culture

• Hohhot is a place where Mongolian and Han cultures blend, with Mongolian and Chinese spoken side by side. Grassland foods such as milk tea, boiled mutton, and roast whole lamb have distinctive flavors, and dairy products are deeply woven into daily life. At the Naadam festival, horse racing, wrestling, and archery display the bold spirit of the grasslands; the morin khuur plays with a melodious, desolate tone, and long-song folk music is vast and moving. The temple culture has a long history—incense burns continuously at Dazhao and Xilitu Zhao, and the Mongolian stone inscriptions at the Five-Pagoda Temple are precious. Diverse cultures coexist harmoniously here, and the unique charm of a grassland city is felt everywhere.

• Hohhot is home to higher education institutions and research bodies such as Inner Mongolia University and Inner Mongolia University of Technology, with notable strength in dairy science and technology R&D; innovation centers of dairy companies such as Yili and Mengniu are gathered here. In recent years, Hohhot has vigorously developed the cloud computing and big data industries, building a national-level data center cluster and earning the name "Grassland Cloud Valley."
