History

• Chongqing was known in ancient times as Bayu, where the Ba people lived and multiplied over three thousand years ago, and the Ba state established its capital here during the pre-Qin period. In the Chunxi era of the Song Dynasty, it was named Chongqing, meaning "double celebration." During the Ming and Qing dynasties, relying on the Yangtze River's golden waterway, Chongqing became a major commercial hub in southwest China. During the War of Resistance Against Japan, large numbers of institutions moved west, and Chongqing served as the wartime capital (secondary capital). In the 1990s, Chongqing was upgraded to a municipality directly under the central government, and its urban construction advanced by leaps and bounds; the magnificent scenery of the Three Gorges on the Yangtze made the city known to the world.

Culture

• The Chongqing dialect belongs to Southwestern Mandarin and is known for its warmth, directness, and lively humor. Hot pot is the soul of this mountain city: bubbling beef tallow, numbing and spicy aromas, and a table of people gathered around the pot eating together fully display the bold generosity of the Bayu people. The dock culture gave rise to folk arts such as the Chuanjiang work songs, and Sichuan opera's face-changing and fire-spitting feats are astonishing.
