History

• Harbin's modern history is inseparable from the railway. When the Chinese Eastern Railway was built in the late 19th century, a small fishing village on the Songhua River rapidly grew into an international commercial city, where Russian-style architecture met a diverse immigrant culture. Even earlier, the Acheng area within Harbin's jurisdiction was the site of the early Jin dynasty capital, leaving precious relics of Jin-source culture. After the mid-20th century, Harbin gradually developed into a major industrial, scientific and educational center in Northeast China; today it is the political, economic and cultural center of Heilongjiang Province and an open gateway to Northeast Asia. The century-old European-style buildings preserved in the old city still tell the historical memory of the "Moscow of the East."

• Harbin's culture is distinguished by its ice-and-snow folk traditions and a blend of Chinese and Western influences. The local dialect is Northeastern Mandarin, spoken with a hearty, humorous tone. Ice and Snow World and the Sun Island Snow Expo form a unique winter cultural landscape, while the European-style architecture of Central Street and Saint Sophia Cathedral reflects a century of East-West cultural encounter. In food, guobaorou (sweet-and-sour pork), red sausage, and dalieba (Russian-style bread) combine Northeastern and Russian flavors. The Harbin Summer Music Concert continues the city's tradition as a "City of Music," and lilacs, the city flower, bloom in the streets and alleys in summer. • Harbin is a major science and education city in Northeast China, home to universities such as Harbin Institute of Technology, Harbin University of Science and Technology, Northeast Forestry University, Northeast Agricultural University, and Heilongjiang University. Harbin Institute of Technology is renowned in aerospace and robotics. Numerous research platforms exist in equipment manufacturing, new materials, and biomedicine, while facilities such as Pingfang Airport serve the aviation industry. Ice and snow equipment R&D and cold-region engineering technology are distinctive local science fields, supporting the ice and snow economy and cold-region urban construction.

• Harbin's 2025 GDP reached 618.85 billion yuan, making it the economic center of Heilongjiang Province.
