History

• Hefei has a history of over two thousand years and was known in ancient times as Luzhou and Luyang. During the Three Kingdoms period, famous battles such as the Battle of Xiaoyao Ford took place here; Bao Zheng, a renowned official of the Song Dynasty, was born in Hefei, and his upright image endures to this day, with Bao Park built in his memory. In the Ming and Qing dynasties, Luzhou was an important administrative and commercial center of the Jianghuai region, and the former residence of the late Qing official Li Hongzhang still stands. In modern times, Hefei has gradually grown from an inland town into the political, economic, and educational center of Anhui, with the city taking on a completely new look.

Culture

• Hefei's culture blends Jianghuai characteristics. The local Jianghuai Mandarin dialect is plain and warm; local operas such as Lu Opera form a distinctive folk landscape and have been listed as national intangible cultural heritage. In food, local flavors such as Luzhou roast duck and Wushan tribute goose are memorable. Sanhe Ancient Town preserves Hui-style architecture and a water-town layout, and folk customs such as Dragon Boat Festival races and temple fairs continue to this day. The fishing culture on the shores of Chaohu Lake is unique, the city's gardens are richly planted with flowers and trees, and new landmarks such as Luogang Park inject a modern leisure atmosphere into the ancient city.
