History

• History: Jiangxi was known in ancient times as Jiangyou and Yuzhang, and has a long history. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, it was divided among the states of Wu and Chu; in the Qin and Han dynasties, Yuzhang Commandery was established, from which Nanchang took its name and has kept it to this day. The great Jin-dynasty poet Tao Yuanming once retired here, leaving behind timeless works of the pastoral poetry school; during the Tang and Song dynasties, Jiangxi's culture flourished and talents emerged in great numbers, producing many famous literary figures. After the Song dynasty, Jingdezhen porcelain was shipped by water routes to markets at home and abroad, making it a world-renowned porcelain capital. In the Ming and Qing periods, the busy Gan River trade route spurred the prosperity of riverside towns, laying the economic and cultural foundation for modern development.

Culture

• Culture: Jiangxi has a profound cultural heritage, and Jingdezhen porcelain art is its brightest jewel, with blue-and-white and famille rose porcelain renowned worldwide; the Ancient Kiln Folk Customs Expo Area still carries on the thousand-year-old craft of porcelain making. Various dialects such as Gan and Hakka converge here, and places like Ganzhou retain a rich Hakka culture. In cuisine, Jiangxi dishes are known for being salty, spicy, fresh, and aromatic, with clay-pot soup and rice noodles deeply favored. The academy culture of Lushan and the Taoist culture of Longhu Mountain have long histories, while Wuyuan's Huizhou-style villages and the autumn sun-drying customs display a unique pastoral aesthetic, together forming Jiangxi's colorful cultural landscape.

Science & Technology

• Science and technology: Jiangxi is home to Nanchang University, Jiangxi University of Finance and Economics and other institutions of higher education, and its research system is continually improving. The province has distinctive strengths in aviation manufacturing, electronic information, traditional Chinese medicine and new materials. Nanchang is one of China's important aviation industry bases, with strong aircraft manufacturing and R&D capabilities. In recent years, Jiangxi has actively developed virtual reality and the digital economy, hosting the World Conference on VR Industry and attracting large numbers of enterprises to settle there. Combining traditional ceramic craftsmanship with modern technology, Jingdezhen is exploring a path of transformation that integrates ceramics with digital technology, and technological innovation is injecting new momentum into the development of this former revolutionary base area.

Economy

• Economy: Jiangxi's economy is supported by manufacturing, nonferrous metals, modern agriculture, and tourism, with a regional GDP of 3,602 billion yuan in 2025. The province is rich in nonferrous metal resources such as rare earths and tungsten, and Ganzhou is an important rare earth industry base; Nanchang's electronic information and aviation industries, Jiujiang's port-based industries, and Jingdezhen's ceramics industry each have their own distinctive features. The Poyang Lake Plain is a famous land of fish and rice, with stable grain and aquatic production. In recent years, leveraging its location and ecological advantages, Jiangxi has taken on industrial transfers, its transportation network has become increasingly complete, and its economy has maintained steady growth.
