Introduction

  • World-class resorts, Portuguese heritage and dazzling nightlife.

History

  • History: Macau has been Chinese territory since ancient times. During the Qin and Han dynasties it belonged to Panyu County in Nanhai Commandery, and subsequent dynasties maintained administrative structures there. In the mid-16th century the Portuguese were permitted to settle and trade in Macau, which gradually became an important gateway for Sino-Western trade and cultural exchange; the eastward spread of Catholicism and the introduction of Western learning to the East largely passed through this place, where Eastern and Western civilizations met and blended. On December 20, 1999, Macau returned to the motherland and the Macau Special Administrative Region was established. Since then the economy has developed rapidly and the city has taken on a new look, while the historic center preserves intact over 400 years of architectural heritage blending Chinese and Western elements.

Culture

  • Culture: Macau is a model of Chinese-Western cultural fusion, with Chinese and Portuguese used side by side and Cantonese as the everyday language. Historic buildings such as the Ruins of St. Paul's, A-Ma Temple, and Senado Square bear witness to the coexistence and integration of Eastern and Western cultures, and the Historic Centre of Macau is therefore inscribed as a World Cultural Heritage site. Portuguese egg tarts, pork chop buns, and crab congee are famous far and wide, and the Macanese culture has formed a distinctive culinary and artistic tradition. Folk festivals such as A-Ma Festival and Earth God Festival are celebrated in the same city alongside Catholic statue processions, while dragon boat races and old-street shops paint a vivid picture of everyday life.

Science & Technology

  • Science and Technology: Macau is home to higher education institutions such as the University of Macau and Macau University of Science and Technology. The University of Macau stands out in research fields including microelectronics and traditional Chinese medicine, and hosts a State Key Laboratory. Leveraging the development of the Guangdong-Hong Kong-Macao Greater Bay Area, Macau is vigorously developing industries in traditional Chinese medicine technology, smart cities, and technological innovation, while the Hengqin Guangdong-Macao Deep Cooperation Zone provides a broad platform for technology enterprises. The international rankings of several universities are steadily rising, research output is increasing, and the innovation atmosphere is growing stronger.

Economy

  • Economy: Macao's GDP in 2024 was approximately MOP 403.3 billion. Gaming and tourism are the pillars of Macao's economy, with numerous international resorts and hotels making Macao a world-renowned tourism and leisure destination. In recent years, Macao has actively promoted moderate economic diversification, with exhibitions, cultural and creative industries, traditional Chinese medicine, and modern finance gradually growing. With a population of 688,300, Macao leverages its location adjacent to the mainland and the conveniences of a free port to maintain strong economic vitality, with tourism, shopping, and dining economies continuing to thrive.
