  1. First Pass Under Heaven
    Start · Entrance
    Enter through the west gate of the old city and climb the "First Pass Under Heaven" tower: the huge plaque hangs high, and from the battlements you can see the Great Wall like a dragon and the Bohai Sea like a mirror; the streets and lanes of the pass town retain the Ming dynasty layout. About 40 minutes. Why this route: it is the soul of Shanhaiguan, and the five characters "First Pass Under Heaven" are its calling card.
  2. Shanhaiguan Old Town

    Drive about 6 km to Laolongtou on the shore of the Bohai Sea: here the Ming Great Wall extends into the sea, and the stone city in the sea, Chenghai Tower, and the sea and sky meet; it is the only place where the Great Wall enters the sea. About 1 hour. Why this route: the spectacular scene of the Great Wall stretching into the sea is unique in all of China.
  4. Meng Jiangnu Temple

    On the way back, visit the Meng Jiangnu Temple (the legend of the Wangfu Stone and Jiangnu Tomb), then climb the Jiaoshan Great Wall to overlook the pass town and the sea. If time is tight, choose only one. About 1 hour. Why this route: the legend of Meng Jiangnu adds a human touch to the mighty pass, while Jiaoshan offers a view back over the entire coastline.
