    Enter through the main gate and first see Dailong Bridge—the town's landmark old bridge, with water flowing beneath and pedestrians above, and ancient banyans with hanging aerial roots on both banks; the Dragon-Claw Banyan has gnarled roots and branches like dragon claws, hundreds of years old. About 40 minutes. Why this route: Dailong Bridge and the Dragon-Claw Banyan are Huangyao's "calling cards"; old bridge and ancient tree together create an ink-painting-like Jiangnan mood.

    Visit Sima Di (a Ming dynasty official residence with finely carved stone lintels), then wander the flagstone lanes: the grid-like alleys crisscross, the aroma of fermented black beans and polygonatum drifts about, and carved wooden window lattices tell of old times. About 1 hour. Why this route: Huangyao's alley layout and old-house details are the main draw; only by strolling slowly through the deep lanes can you savor the flavor.
