Western Qing Tombs Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
The Western Qing Tombs, the Qing dynasty's second imperial mausoleum complex inside the passes, hold four emperors — Yongzheng, Jiaqing, Daoguang and Guangxu — and were listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2000. Tailing, the main tomb, keeps a complete sacred way with solemn stone statues; Muling's Lungen Hall is built entirely of golden nanmu without painted decoration; Chongling is the only tomb here with an open underground palace. Set at the foot of Yongning Mountain amid seas of ancient pines, a full visit takes most of a day on foot and shuttle bus.

  1. Main Gate (Visitor Center)
    Start · Entrance
  2. Tailing Sacred Way
about 5100 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Enter the Tailing spirit way from the stone archway, passing in turn the three stone archways, the Great Red Gate, the Shengde Shengong Stele Pavilion, and the stone statue guard of honor; walk north along the spirit way about 1.5 km to Tailing (the Yongzheng Emperor's tomb, main tomb of the Western Qing Tombs, with its Long'en Hall and Treasure City well preserved). Suggested visit: 1.5 hours. Why this route: The Tailing spirit way is the most regal central axis of the Western Qing Tombs, with a complete stone statue guard of honor, and the main tomb's buildings are the largest of the four tombs.
  3. Tailing (Yongzheng)
about 130 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  4. Changling (Jiaqing)
about 1340 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  5. Muling (Daoguang)
about 4300 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Take the sightseeing bus first to Changling (the Jiaqing Emperor's tomb; the Danbi Stone on the platform before the Long'en Hall is finely carved), then head west to Muling (the Daoguang Emperor's tomb). Muling's Long'en Hall uses whole nanmu timber frames without painted decoration, and its beams are fully carved with cloud dragons. About 1 hour. Why this route: Muling's nanmu Long'en Hall is a building unique to the Western Qing Tombs, showing royal craftsmanship in its simplicity and forming a sharp contrast with the splendor of Tailing.
  6. Chongling (Guangxu)
about 9170 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
The last stop is Chongling (the Guangxu Emperor's tomb), the only imperial tomb at the Western Qing Tombs with an underground palace open to visitors; follow the steps down into the vaulted underground palace to see the stone offering table and the Golden Well; afterward take the sightseeing bus back to the comprehensive service area. About 1 hour. Why this route: Chongling's underground palace is the only one at the Western Qing Tombs that can be entered, and experiencing an emperor's netherworld palace is the most unique experience of the whole trip.
