Shennong Stream Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
Shennong Stream in Badong County, Enshi Prefecture, Hubei, is a gorge-carving tributary that pours into the Yangtze near the mouth of Wuxia Gorge, named for the legend that the mythical Shennong tasted herbs and gathered medicines along its banks. Rising on the southern slopes of Shennongjia, the 60-km stream threads south through the deep mountains of western Hubei. The boat tour rides motor launches and tracker-hauled wooden craft upstream through four gorges — Longchang, Yingwu (Parrot), Shennong and Mianzhu — past sheer cliffs, deep caves and coffins suspended high on the rock faces. The centuries-old tracker chants, inscribed on the national intangible cultural heritage list, make the trip unique; the cruise takes about 2-3 hours.
