Mount Heng (Nanyue) Scenic Area Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
Mount Heng, the southernmost of the Five Great Mountains in Nanyue, Hengyang, Hunan, is known as the "Longevity Mountain", with Zhurong Peak rising to 1,300.2 m. A sacred site for both Buddhism and Taoism, it holds the Nanyue Grand Temple — the largest ancient complex south of the Yangtze — and the incense-thronged Zhurong Temple on the summit. Scattered sites include Mojing Terrace, Cangjing Hall and Water Curtain Cave. Take the shuttle to South Heaven Gate then walk, or hike all the way (3-4 hours); stay overnight for sunrise.

  2. Nanyue Grand Temple
about 290 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Before climbing, visit the Nanyue Grand Temple at the foot of the mountain—the largest ancient architectural complex in Jiangnan, with nine courtyards along its central axis. The front hall enshrines the Sacred Emperor of Nanyue; red walls and golden tiles, ancient towering trees, and Buddhism and Daoism coexist in one temple. About 40 minutes. Why this route: The Nanyue Grand Temple is the "gateway" to Mount Heng; see this magnificent temple first to understand the roots of Nanyue's "longevity culture."
  3. South Heaven Gate
about 5690 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Junction
Take the scenic bus winding up the mountain to Nantianmen (about 1,100 m), then walk up stone steps for about 1 hour to the summit, Zhurong Peak: the Zhurong Hall stands atop the peak with thriving incense; from 1,300 m, the hills of central Hunan stretch below and sea of clouds are common. About 2 hours. Why this route: Only by reaching Zhurong Peak have you truly "been to Nanyue"; the summit hall framed with clouds is Mount Heng's spiritual high point.
  4. Zhurong Peak
about 1030 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  5. Mojing Terrace
about 3120 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
On the way down, transfer near Nantianmen to the scenic bus to Mojing Tai—where the Tang-dynasty Chan master Huairang polished a brick into a mirror to enlighten Daoyi, site of a famous koan in Buddhist history; the Mojing Tai stone inscription and the He Family Villa (a command post during the War of Resistance) remain. About 40 minutes. Why this route: Mojing Tai carries Chan Buddhist lore and wartime history, adding cultural depth to the Mount Heng trip.
