Leshan Giant Buddha Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
The Leshan Giant Buddha, a UNESCO World Heritage site, sits where the Min, Qingyi and Dadu rivers meet at Lingyun Mountain, Leshan, Sichuan. Carved from 713 to 803 AD over 90 years, the seated Maitreya statue is 71 m tall — the largest stone Buddha in the world, "a mountain that is a Buddha, a Buddha that is a mountain". View the head, descend the Nine-Turn Plank Path to the feet, or take a boat for the full panorama.

  1. Main Gate
    Start · Entrance
  2. Lingyun Temple
about 60 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  3. Buddha Head Deck
about 20 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Walk up the stone steps from the main gate, pass Lingyun Temple (an ancient temple beside the Buddha with thriving incense), and reach the Buddha's Head viewing platform—the head is about 14 meters high and can hold a hundred people standing, and people can pass through the ear. Only standing beside the head can you feel the Buddha's "greatness." About 40 minutes. Why this route: First see the details of the Buddha's head up close (the hair coils and drainage design of the ears), then take the boardwalk down to the Buddha's feet, progressing from "details" to "the whole."
  4. Nine-Turn Plank Path
about 40 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Walk down the winding plank road on the left side of the Buddha (a Tang-dynasty cliffside path along the river). It's narrow and steep, with the Buddha on one side and the river on the other. At the Buddha's feet, look up: the 71-meter-tall Buddha sits with hands on knees, three rivers converge below, and boats drift by like leaves. About 1 hour. Why this route: Looking up from the feet is the most awe-inspiring way to grasp the Buddha's scale—the 71-meter figure framed with the river is beyond words.
