Dujiangyan Irrigation System Tour Guide
Real coordinates · smooth curved routeDujiangyan in Dujiangyan City, Sichuan, is a vast irrigation system built by Li Bing and his son in the Warring States period — a UNESCO World Heritage site and the oldest operating dam-free water-diversion project on earth. Its three components — the Fish Mouth (diversion dike), Flying Sand Weir (flood and silt control) and Bottle-Neck Channel (intake) — have irrigated the Chengdu Plain for over 2,000 years. Also visit the Erwang Temple, Anlan Suspension Bridge and Lidui Park. Allow about 3 hours.

Bottle-Neck Channelabout 1190 m (straight line) from the previous stop · SightEnter Lidui Park from the South Bridge and first see Baopingkou (Bottle-Neck Channel)—the intake throat that Li Bing and his workers cut open, where the inner river water flows into the Chengdu Plain. Then see Feishayan (Flying Sand Weir)—a low dam for flood discharge and sand release; the six-character water-management maxim "dig the channel deep, keep the weir low" is inscribed here. About 1 hour. Why this route: Baopingkou and Feishayan are the core of Dujiangyan's water-management wisdom—see intake and sand release first to understand this 2,000-year-old hydraulic marvel.

-
Anlan Suspension Bridgeabout 320 m (straight line) from the previous stop · SightWalk upstream along the river to Yuzui (Fish Mouth)—the diversion levee built mid-river that splits the Min River in two (outer river for flood discharge, inner river for irrigation), shaped like a fish mouth pointing up. Cross the Anlan Suspension Bridge (also called the Couple's Bridge) to the far bank; the bridge sways and the current runs fast. About 40 minutes. Why this route: Yuzui's 40/60 water-splitting design is ingenious; crossing Anlan Bridge and looking down at the diversion is the best way to appreciate the engineering wisdom of "water and drought both obey man."
-
Erwang Templeabout 240 m (straight line) from the previous stop · SightCross the bridge and climb Yulei Mountain to visit the Two Kings Temple—a Daoist-style complex built to honor Li Bing and his son, terraced along the slope. It preserves steles of water-management maxims from past dynasties. From the high point you can overlook the entire irrigation system. About 40 minutes. Why this route: The Two Kings Temple both commemorates the heroes and offers a high vantage over Yuzui and Feishayan—a fitting finale to the Dujiangyan visit.
