Yading in Daocheng County, Ganzi, Sichuan, is called "the last pure land on the blue planet". Three sacred peaks dominate: Xiannairi (6,032 m), Yangmaiyong (5,958 m) and Xianuoduoji (5,958 m), arranged like a "pin" character, with Milk Lake, Five-Color Lake and Pearl Lake at their feet amid virgin forest, alpine meadows and glaciers. At 3,900-4,700 m altitude, guard against altitude sickness. Short route: Chonggu Temple to Pearl Lake; long route: Luorong Pasture to Milk and Five-Color Lakes. Plan 1-2 days.

    Take the sightseeing bus to Zhaguanbeng, walk 20 minutes to Chonggu Temple, and look up at Xiannairi Snow Peak. The short trail of about 1.5 km leads to Pearl Lake: emerald water with Xiannairi reflected in it, the most accessible and beautiful lake in Yading. About 2 hours. Why this route: The short trail is easy with stunning views—see Pearl Lake and Xiannairi together, acclimatize to the altitude, and save energy for tomorrow's long trail.

    The next day, take the electric cart from Chonggu Temple to Luorong Pasture—an alpine meadow ringed by three snow peaks, with yaks scattered and streams winding, and Yangmaiyong close at hand. It's Yading's "cover shot." About 40 minutes. Why this route: Luorong Pasture faces Yangmaiyong directly; the meadow ringed by three peaks is Yading's classic viewpoint and the start of the long trail.
  6. Milk Lake
    about 3880 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
    Hike about 4–5 km from Luorong Pasture (600 m elevation gain) to Milk Lake: milky-blue water surrounded by snow peaks. Continue up about 300 m to Five-Color Lake, whose surface refracts five-colored light in the sun. About 5 hours round trip; at 4,700 m, pace yourself. Why this route: Milk Lake and Five-Color Lake are Yading's ultimate scenery—reaching both after a high-altitude trek is the deepest gift of this "last pure land."
