Qinghai Lake Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
Qinghai Lake in Hainan Prefecture, Qinghai, is China's largest inland salt lake — about 4,583 km² at 3,196 m elevation. Its waters shine deep blue like a sea, ringed by vast grassland and, in July-August, golden rapeseed fields; Bird Island is a haven for migratory birds. Key areas: Erlangjian Scenic Area (main, with boat trips), Sand Island, Bird Island (seasonal) and Heimahe (sunrise viewpoint). The 360-km ring road makes lake-circuit cycling a classic. Allow about 3 hours for the main area.

  1. Erlangjian Gate
    Start · Entrance
Enter through the Erlangjian gate and stroll the lakeside boardwalk: the water is blue as a mirror, distant snow peaks meet grassland, and you'll see the "Qinghai Lake" stone inscription and the Queen Mother of the West statue. About 40 minutes. Why this route: Erlangjian is Qinghai Lake's best-equipped main scenic area—walk a stretch of shoreline first to feel the vastness of this "plateau sapphire."
  2. Erlangjian Pier
about 980 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Junction
  3. Lakeshore Boardwalk
about 460 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  4. Cruise Pier
about 37240 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  5. Heimahe Sunrise Point
about 81500 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
If you stayed overnight at Heimahe, go to the lakeside at 5–6 a.m. for sunrise: the sun rises from the lake, dyeing sky and water orange-red—Qinghai Lake's most romantic moment. After sunrise, continue along the ring road. Why this route: Heimahe sunrise is Qinghai Lake's signature experience; the lake is mirror-like in the morning light and worth rising early for.
