Tianchi (Heavenly Lake), about 110 km from Urumqi in Fukang, Changji, Xinjiang, is a moraine lake at 1,910 m elevation, covering about 4.9 km². Legend says it was the bathing pool of the Queen Mother of the West. Clear turquoise water mirrors snow peaks and spruce forests, dominated by the Bogda Peak (5,445 m). Highlights include the lake dam, the Sea-Settling Needle, the East and West Little Pools and the Mayashan cable car. Allow 3-4 hours.

    Take the shuttle bus up the winding road (about 40 minutes) to the Tianchi dam—standing on it, Tianchi looks like a jade gem set among snow peaks and spruce, with the snowy top of Bogda Peak reflected in the lake. About 30 minutes. Why this route: The Tianchi dam is where you first see the lake; the framed view of snow peak, water, and forest instantly cures travel fatigue.
  3. Sea-Settling Needle

    Walk along the lakeside boardwalk to the Dinghai Shenzhen — a lone old elm by the lake (legend says it is the Goddess of the West's needle that pins the lake); continue to the Xiwangmu Temple, which faces the lake against the mountain, where you can pray and look back over the whole Tianchi panorama. About 1 hour. Why this route: the lakeside trail links Tianchi's legends and scenery, and the Dinghai Shenzhen and Xiwangmu Temple make the fairyland atmosphere of Yaochi tangible.

    With time to spare, take the Mayashan cable car up to Mayashan at 3,056 m and look down on all of Tianchi: the lake lies like a crescent moon among the mountains, with Bogda Peak close at hand. On the way down, stop at the West Small Tianchi. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: the Mayashan cable car gives a bird's-eye view of Tianchi, completely different from seeing it at lake level — worth the extra time.
