Temple of Heaven Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
The Temple of Heaven in Beijing's Dongcheng District was where Ming and Qing emperors performed annual sacrifices for good harvests. A UNESCO World Heritage site, it is China's largest surviving ancient sacrificial complex. The layout is a double-walled "hui" shape: the Circular Mound Altar (south) for winter solstice sacrifices, the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests (north), linked by the Danbi Bridge. The triple-eaved, blue-tiled Hall of Prayer is an icon of Beijing. Allow 2-3 hours walking the axis south-to-north.

  1. South Gate
    Start · Entrance
  2. Circular Mound Altar
about 280 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Enter at the South Gate and first visit the Circular Mound Altar—a three-tiered white marble terrace where emperors sacrificed to Heaven at the winter solstice. Speak from the central "Heaven's Heart Stone" and your voice rings out (an acoustic marvel). To the north is the Imperial Vault of Heaven, whose round wall is the famous Echo Wall, with the "Three Echo Stones." About 40 minutes. Why this route: The Circular Mound Altar and Echo Wall are the starting point and acoustic wonders of the Temple of Heaven complex—south to north along the axis is the smoothest route.
  3. Imperial Vault of Heaven
about 160 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  4. Danbi Bridge
about 180 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Walk north along the Danbi Bridge (a raised white marble path that was the sacred way for emperors during heaven-worshipping rituals) to reach the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, the heart of the Temple of Heaven: a round hall with triple eaves of blue glazed tiles, its four dragon-well pillars symbolizing the four seasons, where Ming and Qing emperors prayed for grain in early spring. Circle the hall to admire the architectural details. About 40 minutes. Why this route: The Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests is the essence of the Temple of Heaven and a Beijing landmark; its blue tiles and golden top are spectacular in sunlight, a must-see for every visitor.
  5. Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests
about 410 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  6. North Gate
about 470 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Entrance
After the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests, exit via the North Gate, or loop east to see auxiliary buildings such as the Fasting Palace and the Divine Music Administration before leaving by the East Gate. Ancient cypresses tower throughout the park; if time allows, stroll on the lawns or among the cypress groves. About 30 minutes. Why this route: The Temple of Heaven is not only an altar but also a public park; a slow walk among the ancient cypresses before leaving lets you enjoy the "green lung of the Temple of Heaven."
