The Xishuangbanna Tropical Botanical Garden of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Menglun, Mengla, Yunnan, is China's largest and most biodiverse botanical garden and a 5A scenic area. The west zone holds themed gardens — flowers, rare plants, celebrity trees and palms — while the east zone preserves tropical rainforest, all on a "gourd island" encircled by the Luosuo River. Look for sky-reaching Dipterocarpus, dancing grass and upas trees. Plan a full day.

  1. Main Gate

    Enter the West Area from the main gate and first tour the Hundred Flowers Garden (a sea of flowers planted by color, blooming year-round), then the Rare and Exotic Plants Garden — home to dancing grass that moves, color-changing flowers and carnivorous pitcher plants. Great fun. About 1 hour. Why this route: the Hundred Flowers and Rare Plants gardens best show the wonders of tropical plants; seeing the "moving and man-eating" plants first gets you in the mood.

    In the Palm Garden, dozens of palm species tower tall with swaying shadows; in the Celebrity Trees Garden, trees planted by Chinese and foreign leaders and celebrities bear witness to history. Along the way you'll also see legendary species like the towering Parashorea and the poisonous upas tree. About 1 hour. Why this route: these two gardens are the essence of the botanical garden, combining science and fun with tall palms and famous-tree legends.
  6. Rainforest (East)
    about 1940 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
    In the afternoon, take the electric cart to the East Area rainforest: century-old banyans forming a forest from a single tree, strangler vines and buttress roots, with streams murmuring in the ravine and humid air — follow the boardwalk deep in to feel the vitality of the primeval rainforest. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: the intact valley rainforest of the East Area is the soul of the botanical garden; only by walking into it can you understand the grandeur and fragility of the tropical rainforest.
