    From the pedestrian street to Zhusheng Bridge (an old bridge spanning the Wuyang River, with pavilions on it), then to the Qinglong Cave complex clinging to the cliff: Buddhist, Taoist and Confucian halls stacked layer upon layer among the cliff caves, a magnificent sight. About 1.5 hours. Why this route: Qinglong Cave is Zhenyuan's soul landmark, and the ingenuity of the cliff-hugging old buildings is rare nationwide.

    Wander the old alleys (Sifang Well Lane and others): flagstone paths wind along the hillside, with old houses, guild halls and escort agencies well preserved on both sides; climb to a high point in the lanes to overlook the old town's rooftops and the Wuyang River. About 40 minutes. Why this route: the old alleys retain the fabric of a Ming-Qing town, and from above the "one river dividing two towns" layout is clearest.
