Slender West Lake lies in the northwest of Yangzhou, Jiangsu Province — a chain of lakeside gardens that took shape during the high Qing era of the Kangxi and Qianlong reigns, its narrow ribbon-like waters earning it the name "Slender." Today it is a national 5A scenic area and a heritage site of the Grand Canal World Heritage, with celebrated sights strung along the shore: Xu Garden, Little Golden Hill, the Fishing Platform, the Five Pavilion Bridge, the White Pagoda, Xichun Terrace, the Twenty-Four Bridges, and the Ten-Thousand Flower Garden — the Five Pavilion Bridge being Yangzhou's landmark. Allow three to four hours on foot, or glide past the willows by painted boat, savoring the classic Jiangnan vision of towers reflected in water along a shore lined with flowers.
