Suzhou Lingering Garden Guide
Real coordinates · smooth curved routeThe Lingering Garden on Liuyuan Road, outside the Changmen Gate in Gusu District, Suzhou, was first built in the Wanli era of the Ming dynasty by Xu Taishi, a vice minister of the Court of the Imperial Stud. One of Suzhou's four great classical gardens and a Major Historical and Cultural Site Protected at the National Level, it was inscribed as part of the Classical Gardens of Suzhou on the UNESCO World Heritage List in 1997. Renowned for its refined architecture, the garden is divided into four sections: a central part centred on water and rockeries, an eastern part dense with halls and courtyards, a pastoral northern part, and an earthen-hill western part. Covering barely 2.3 hectares, it is celebrated for dramatic spatial contrast and winding corridors; its name means 'a garden to linger in forever.' The recommended route takes about two hours.
