Nanxun Ancient Town Tour Guide

Real coordinates · smooth curved route
Nanxun Ancient Town, in Huzhou, Zhejiang, is the only one of the six great Jiangnan towns to blend Chinese and Western styles: amid the white walls, dark tiles and canals of the water town stand Western mansions with Roman columns and stained glass. The recommended route starts at the South Gate, linking Little Lotus Garden, Jiaye Hall Library, Zhang Shiming's Old Residence and Liu's Ladder House, ending with a riverside walk to Hundred Rooms, about 3 hours in total.

  1. Little Lotus Garden
    Start · Sight
  2. Jiaye Hall Library
about 150 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Start with Little Lotus Villa, the private garden of Nanxun's richest man Liu Yong's family, where a ten-mu lotus pond mirrors Taihu stone rockeries; adjacent is the Jiaye Hall Library, the largest private library in Jiangnan, holding Song and Yuan editions and source copies of the Complete Library of the Four Treasuries. The two are next to each other and can be visited together in about 1.5 hours. Why this route: Little Lotus Villa and the library are the source of Nanxun's "Four Elephants" family culture—the garden and the book collection are both peerless; skipping them means you haven't been to Nanxun.
  3. Zhang Shiming's Old Residence
about 370 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Zhang Shiming's Former Residence is known as "Jiangnan's No. 1 Private Mansion," with a European ballroom and French glass windows hidden behind five-bay, four-courtyard Chinese halls; the Liu Family Staircase House is a red-brick Western-style complex, commonly called the "Red House." The two are close together and can be visited as one. Why this route: Chinese-Western hybrid architecture is Nanxun's unique signature distinguishing it from other Jiangnan water towns—these two are the cream of the crop.
  4. Liu's Ladder House
about 490 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
  5. Hundred Rooms
about 810 m (straight line) from the previous stop · Sight
Stroll along the river through the Hundred-Room Corridor, a Ming Dynasty riverside residential gallery whose white walls and dark tiles reflect in the water; at dusk red lanterns light up one by one—the most photogenic stretch of the old town. You can also take a rowboat night tour. Why this route: The Hundred-Room Corridor is Nanxun's most iconic water-town scene, a must for photographers, and the most relaxing way to wrap up the trip.
