Reserve the Cable Car & Beat Altitude Sickness
Snag the big cable-car ticket a day ahead on the official app — it sells out in seconds in peak season. Above 4,500 m, carry oxygen and chocolate and move slowly.
Navigating the Old Town
The cobbled maze is easy to get lost in — orient by Sifang Square and follow the water (with the flow in, against it out). Side alleys beat the commercial main streets.
High-Altitude Sun
At about 2,400 m the UV is fierce — sunscreen and shades are non-negotiable, and carry a jacket for cool mornings and evenings.
Don't Day-Trip Lugu Lake
The mountain road is winding and takes 3–4 hours each way — pack motion-sickness meds. Don't day-trip it; stay overnight or you'll miss the sunrise.
Book Early in Peak Season
Summer and holiday prices double — book rooms two weeks ahead. For golden-sunrise shots of Jade Dragon, winter mornings are the clearest.
