History

• Nanjing has a history of over two thousand years as a city. During the Three Kingdoms period, Eastern Wu established its capital here, and later the Eastern Jin and the Southern Dynasties of Song, Qi, Liang, and Chen successively made it their capital, earning it the name "Capital of the Six Dynasties"; the Southern Tang and the early Ming also used Nanjing as a capital. The city walls and gates built in the Ming Dynasty remain well preserved today, with the magnificent Zhonghua Gate. After opening as a treaty port in modern times, Nanjing gradually developed into an industrial and educational center in the middle and lower reaches of the Yangtze River. Today Nanjing retains historical districts such as the Ming city wall and Confucius Temple, and the banks of the Qinhuai River still hold their ancient charm, making it an important window into China's historical changes.

Culture

• Nanjing has a profound cultural heritage, and the Nanjing dialect, melodious and rhythmic, is a representative of Jianghuai Mandarin. Confucius Temple has since ancient times been a place where scholarship and everyday street life blend, and the Qinhuai Lantern Festival is lively and spectacular; salted duck, duck-blood vermicelli soup and other snacks are culinary calling cards. Nanjing brocade weaving craftsmanship has been inscribed on the Representative List of the Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, and traditional arts such as Jinling woodblock printing and Kunqu opera continue to this day. The plum blossom is the city flower, and viewing plum blossoms at Plum Blossom Hill in early spring is a major civic event. In literature, Nanjing is the hometown of Cao Xueqin, author of Dream of the Red Chamber, and for thousands of years writers and poets have left countless poems here.

• Nanjing has strong higher-education resources, with prestigious universities such as Nanjing University and Southeast University gathering a large pool of research talent, and the city is also home to numerous national-level research institutes and laboratories. Industries such as software and information technology, smart grids, new energy vehicles, and biomedicine are actively innovating, with the Software Valley and Jiangbei New Area hosting a large number of tech enterprises. • Nanjing's 2025 GDP reached 1,942.878 billion yuan, making it a key economic engine of the Yangtze River Delta. Electronics and information, automobile manufacturing, steel and petrochemicals, and financial services form its pillar industries, with many well-known companies based here. Backed by the Yangtze River golden waterway and Lukou International Airport, Nanjing has a logistics network extending in all directions. In recent years, the digital economy and high-end manufacturing have accelerated, the industrial structure has kept upgrading, and its overall strength ranks among the top cities nationwide.
