Introduction

  • Famous for Changbai Mountain, pristine forests and winter skiing.

History

  • Jilin takes its name from the Jilin Wula city established on the banks of the Songhua River in the Qing Dynasty, meaning "city along the river." This area was once home to the ancestors of the Manchu, such as the Sushen and Mohe, and relics of Balhae and Goguryeo tell of the ancient kingdoms of the Northeast. In the Qing Dynasty, Jilin was a key outpost beyond the pass, long tasked with guarding the frontier. In modern times, Changchun rose with the construction of the Chinese Eastern Railway and developed into a major industrial city in the Northeast. In the mid-20th century, FAW Group was founded in Changchun, making Jilin an important cradle of China's automobile industry.

Culture

  • Jilin's culture brings together the customs of the Manchu, Korean, and Mongolian peoples, with Korean song and dance and foods such as cold noodles and rice cakes being especially distinctive. Jilin's rime ice is hailed as one of China's Four Great Natural Wonders, and the winter fishing on Chagan Lake continues a thousand-year fishing and hunting tradition. Folk arts such as Errenzhuan and the Northeast Yangge are full of passion and energy, while classic films produced by Changchun Film Studio carry the memory of Chinese cinema. Changbai Mountain products such as ginseng and deer antler, together with crafts such as Manchu paper-cutting, form a uniquely characteristic picture of Guandong culture.

Science & Technology

  • Jilin is home to renowned universities such as Jilin University and Northeast Normal University, as well as national research institutions including the Changchun Institute of Optics, Fine Mechanics and Physics of the Chinese Academy of Sciences, with outstanding strengths in optics, chemistry, and automotive engineering. The "Jilin-1" satellite constellation pioneered the large-scale networking model for commercial remote sensing satellites, with satellite technology achieving continuous breakthroughs. Changchun, known as the "Auto City," sees FAW accelerating its layout in new energy and intelligent connected vehicles, while CRRC Changchun's high-speed train sets run across the country.

Economy

  • Jilin's economy is characterized by automobiles, petrochemicals, agricultural product processing, and ice-and-snow tourism, with a 2025 regional GDP of 1,497.388 billion yuan. FAW Group is headquartered in Changchun, and the automotive and parts industry is the province's leading pillar industry. Jilin is also an important commercial grain base, with specialties such as rice, corn, ginseng, and deer antler sold nationwide. In recent years, the ice-and-snow economy has flourished, with ski resorts such as Beidahu and Songhua Lake driving winter tourism, and the Chagan Lake winter fishing festival is widely renowned, becoming a new growth driver.
