The Longmen Grottoes were first carved around AD 493, when Emperor Xiaowen of the Northern Wei moved his capital to Luoyang, and were worked on for more than 400 years through the Eastern Wei, Western Wei, Northern Qi, Sui and Tang dynasties. The site preserves over 2,300 caves and niches and more than 100,000 statues. The grottoes line both banks of the Yi River: the West Hill holds the finest caves, above all the Vairocana Buddha of Fengxian Temple, while the East Hill, though smaller, offers the best panorama of the West Hill from across the river. Classic route: enter at the West Hill entrance, visit Qianxi Temple, the Binyang Caves and the Ten Thousand Buddha Cave in turn, climb to Fengxian Temple to face the Vairocana Buddha, cross the Yi River bridge to the East Hill, look back on the whole West Hill, then continue to Xiangshan Temple and Bai Garden.
