Introduction

  • The Yangtze River, the Three Gorges and Wuhan's vibrant food scene.

History

  • History: Hubei was known in ancient times as Jingchu, with a long and profound history. During the Spring and Autumn and Warring States periods, the State of Chu rose here and created a brilliant Chu culture; Qu Yuan's poetry is the most glorious chapter of that culture. After the Qin and Han dynasties, Hubei stood at a key north-south transportation hub, and cities such as Jiangxia and Jingzhou successively became important military and economic centers. During the Three Kingdoms period, the Battle of Red Cliffs took place here, leaving behind countless heroic legends. In the Tang and Song dynasties, the three towns of Wuhan gradually took shape and commerce flourished; in the Ming and Qing dynasties, Hankou became one of the four great towns thanks to its water transport advantages. In modern times, Hubei was one of the important birthplaces of China's modern industry and education; the Hanyang Ironworks and the Beijing-Hankou Railway heralded the beginning of China's modernization.

Culture

  • Culture: Hubei culture is centered on Jingchu culture, combining diverse influences from Bashu, the Central Plains, and Wu-Yue. The Songs of Chu and bell-and-chime music and dance display the romantic, unrestrained artistic temperament of the ancient Chu people; the Zenghouyi bells unearthed in Suizhou can still play sounds a thousand years old. In cuisine, Hubei dishes are known for their fresh spiciness, and foods such as hot dry noodles, Wuchang fish, and crayfish are widely renowned. Hubei's local operas are rich and varied, with forms such as Han opera and Chu opera each having their followers; the Taoist martial arts culture of Wudang Mountain is especially distinctive, attracting enthusiasts from around the world to come and study. The folk festivals and handicrafts of the Jingchu land also reveal rich local flavor everywhere.

Science & Technology

  • Science and Technology: Hubei is a major hub of science and education in China. Its capital, Wuhan, is home to many well-known universities such as Wuhan University and Huazhong University of Science and Technology, and ranks among the top in the country for the number of enrolled university students. The province has strong research capabilities and notable achievements in fields such as optoelectronics, lasers, biomedicine, and BeiDou navigation. Wuhan Optics Valley is the core cluster of China's optoelectronics industry and is known as Optics Valley of China. In recent years, Hubei has accelerated its layout in industries such as memory chips, display screens, and new energy vehicles, and many national-level laboratories and innovation platforms have settled here, providing strong scientific and technological support for the development of the central region.

Economy

  • Economy: Hubei is a major economic province in central China, with a regional GDP of 6,266.09 billion yuan in 2025. Its pillar industries include automobile manufacturing, steel, optoelectronics, and biomedicine. Wuhan is known as the City of Automobiles, home to companies such as Dongfeng Motor; the Optics Valley clusters thousands of optoelectronics firms and leads the world in optical fiber and cable output. The Yangtze River golden waterway and a dense high-speed rail network make Hubei a key national logistics hub, while aviation facilities such as Ezhou Huahu International Airport further enhance its openness, sustaining steady economic growth.
